All Quiet on the Western Front 4/19/15
“The first recruit seems actually to have gone insane. He butts his head against the wall like a goat. We must try to-night to take him to the rear. Meanwhile we bind him, but in such a way that in case of attack he can be released at once.”
[Excerpt From: Erich Maria Remarque & Arthur Wesley Wheen. “All Quiet on the Western Front.”]
This quote demonstrates how difficult it is to keep a level head in moments of terror. As I read this depiction of a massacre, it suddenly dawned on me that this is a soldier’s reality. This is what they face day after day. I began to realize that I have never fully appreciated war, until now. Yet, no one can actually appreciate the agony of war until they are forced to pull the trigger or run for their own lives. For me, it only matters that I understand how difficult it is to stay sane during war and how insanity is something that should never be frowned upon.
