Yes, I have had some academic difficulties. From kindergarten through 4rd grade, I attended a Newton public school where the typical class size averaged around 30 students. To this day, I can remember the frustration I felt when my teacher would pose a question to the class and my hand would shoot into the air, but unfortunately, my other classmates would do the same, and my answer would not be acknowledged. This happened many times and my confidence slowly began to melt away and with that lack of confidence, I started to despise school. Every day, after the school day had concluded, I would complain to my parents about how “boring and stupid” school had become. I remember telling my parents I didn’t need to learn anymore and I remember them being very worried. It seems almost obvious now that I was intentionally dumbing myself down in an attempt to receive attention. Lucky for me, my parents addressed this issue by sending me to Fenn. To this day, I credit Fenn for “saving” me because if it were not for Fenn, I would have most likely continued to hate school, which I cannot imagine turning into something positive.
